Mp3 (MPEG layer-3) is a patent protected data compression
technology developed and owned by Fraunhofer Gesellschaft based
in Munich, Germany.
Mp3 compression reduces the size of a standard AIFF format
music file, used on an ordinary audio cd, to one tenth of
it's original size. That's how we are able to put 10 hours
of music onto a single RadioROM mp3/CD-ROM.
Mp3 compression technology actually allows you to use different
rates of compression.
RadioROM uses 128kbps because it allows us to put 100+
tracks,
10-hours or more music, onto a single disk - with sufficient space
left for our software application, database and image content.
Using the same data rate as standard CDs, 256 kbps DOES
NOT give twice the quality but would mean that only 5 hours
of music would fit on a disc.
In perceptual terms, listening to RadioROM is the same as
listening to FM radio audio quality.
MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group. MPEG compression
technology was developed to fit high-quality sound on to
movie DVDs.
Mp3 at 128kbps is now a music industry standard.
